As winter draws to a close in the northern hemisphere, and likewise summertime in the southern hemisphere,
it is important to be on the lookout for aphids - the
tiny sucking insects that prey on backyard crops mainly in the spring, and also to a lesser
extent throughout the fall. Early identification and
action can prevent damage to a wide variety of plants, WITHOUT resorting
to chemical pesticides. This, a general term for
any range of genera and species, cluster on young stems
and leaves. Typically, they secrete a sugary sticky
substance called honeydew. This in itself is both unsightly and unpleasant, but it's rare that crops are severely influenced by it in the long term.

Of much greater consequence is that the complex of black, powdery fungi that grow on the honeydew secretions.
All these, by smothering the leaves in soot, significantly reduce the rate of photosynthesis, and therefore the energy accessible
to the plant. Ideally, little outbreaks of aphids are best left unattended, so as
to offer food for their natural enemies. Birds, small mammals and a multitude of beneficial insects,
such as ladybirds, feed or parasite on aphids to a fantastic extent, and it is better to tolerate some temporary imperfection from the decorative plants, as opposed to disturb
the natural balance between various creatures. For this reason, applying chemical pesticides is an option which should
not be considered other than in extreme conditions. As an optimal ecological
equilibrium is hard to attain in most garden situations, it is essential to be looking out
for aphid activity, and to act promptly. In the very first sign of sticky secretions on the leaves
and young juicy stems, employ a firm jet of water on the
affected parts, and where possible, crush the aphids by massaging the stems or leaves between thumb and
forefinger. An individual should also be attentive to weather forecasts, as
the hot dry winds accompanying specific systems typical of
spring and autumn, kill-off most of the rest of the aphids
which have survived the water treatment. Examples of this are the Sirocco in Southern Italy and the Hamsin from the Eastern Mediterranean. In the event of more serious infestations,
then the usage of non-toxic products could be considered, such as insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils,
or natural pesticides according to pyrethrins. In some cases though, much like tall trees,
mechanical treatment, or spraying using a environmentally friendly product could be impractical or even impossible.
One possibility is to apply a systemic pesticide such as
Confidor, in which it is injected into the ground, watered-in and consumed
by the plant's roots as a solute in the soil water. As a long term strategy of pest management nonetheless, it'd be far better to avoid planting susceptible species in the
first place. Don´t overlook the essential prerequisites of thorough soil cultivation and loss
of weeds before resorting to insecticides.
Pull up weeds and do not leave plant debris scattered about the place.
Take obvious security precautions when applying insecticides, such as facial and hand protection. Ensure
you only apply in the ideal times for edible create ; normally insecticides should not be applied close to
harvest. Keep products well out of reach of children and animals.
Also, keep containers nicely marked. Always, always, clean out
thoroughly spray guns and receptacles if they're most likely to be used for other functions.

Please be aware that BHC, frequently referred to below, is simply a frequent use
name for an organochloride pesticide generally containing DDT, dieldrin, heptachlor and chlordane.
Check with your supplier that his or her merchandise
is genuinely BHC established, without any cancer concerns.
